Until I saw The Upper Room, part of his new exhibition at Victoria Miro gallery in London, I had never been a great fan of Chris Ofili’s work. It seemed to be all rock and no talk, or rather no new talk, just more appropriation and glamorization of black culture that artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat had already done in a seemingly much more honest way.
