German born Canadian artist Volker Seding approaches his subject from the vantage point of a witness. Presenting architectural façades from Toronto, New York, Paris, Venice, and Havana, amongst other locales, his photographs provide a visual record of the history of the street and the city it inhabits. These exquisite buildings bear witness to their quiet survival through time-accumulated abrasions and their façades tell stories about time’s passing. Though they exhibit different designs and varied decorative elements, the structures Seding captures all have the same core architecture regardless of the time or place of their construction. These essential similarities reflect the commonality of all peoples. Seding’s works can be found in many institutions and private collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada.
